Dr Alexandra Getz

I am a general adult psychiatrist who has been in NHS and independent sector practice for over 14 years. I work in a busy North London NHS Community Mental Health Team, which means I assess and treat a very wide range of mental health difficulties, both in terms of nature and severity. These conditions include severe mood disorders such as recurrent depression and bipolar disorder, generalized and more specific anxiety (such as OCD), psychotic conditions, and problems with drug and alcohol use. I have had many years of experience working with patients with borderline personality disorders and with Complex PTSD. A large part of my practice is assessing and treating adult ADHD, with medication and with non-pharmacological strategies. I have growing experience, expertise, and interest in assessing autism spectrum disorder.

I also have a busy and long-established medicolegal practice.

I have always wanted to be a psychiatrist, which is why I went into medicine. I went to medical school in Johannesburg, South Africa, and specialized as a
psychiatrist in London through the South London and Maudsley Training Scheme.

I thoroughly enjoy my work and consider it a privilege to be able to support people going through difficult mental health experiences. Because of my
experience in the NHS and in the medicolegal world (where one must consider
individual and societal issues from a number of different perspectives), I tend to take a broad and holistic approach to all presenting difficulties, considering the most appropriate treatment in the short- and long-term.

I often consult with families as part of the work, and in fact consider that an
essential part of the treatment for some of my patients. I enjoy close working
relationships with my mental health colleagues and fellow psychiatrists, another essential aspect of patient recovery.

In addition to my patient-centred approach, I keep up to date with all psychiatric treatment innovations. This includes new medication to treat various conditions and non-pharmacological interventions such as rTMS and Flow Neuroscience.
